Prekindergarten
Students in prekindergarten receive a Christ-centered education. With an emphasis on academic and spiritual development, the five-day-a-week prekindergarten program is designed to support four-year-old and five-year-old students transition to kindergarten. Together, with the family, we prepare our students for success in the classroom and beyond by encouraging a deep understanding of God’s great love for them.
Enrollment:
To enroll a child in prekindergarten, the child must be four years old by September 1st of the current year or receive approval from the principal. All children must be fully toilet trained. A valid birth certificate, proof of immunizations or a waiver, and a physical are required prior to attending school.
The state of Michigan is phasing in a new age guideline for parents wishing to enroll a child in kindergarten. In each of the next three years the cutoff date by which a child must be five years old will change slightly. Kindergarten students in the 2013-2014 school year must be five years old by November 1, 2013. For the 2014-2015 school year the student must be five by October 1, 2014. And for the 2015-2016 school year the birthday cutoff is September 1, 2015. September 1 will then become the permanent cutoff date. Parents may seek principal permission for their child to begin school earlier if it is in the child’s best interests.
Curriculum:
The prekindergarten program prepares children for kindergarten and elementary success by focusing on a strong academic foundation in core curriculum subjects as well as strengthening each child’s relationship with Jesus. Students pray, hear Bible stories, and sing as part of Christian instruction. Math concepts are introduced using written and hands-on materials. Language arts instruction includes reading readiness, phonics, and handwriting. Specifically, the teacher uses Handwriting Without Tears to teach literacy, phonics, and math.
Students attend music, library, and chapel each week. Field trips and special events are used to enrich and support curriculum. Some special education services are available.
